Get in TouchThe Approach
Entering one is among the strongest signals a student can send on a university application — not because of the prize, but because of what the process demands: choosing a question no syllabus has prepared you for, conducting independent research, developing an original argument, and sustaining it in clear, precise prose.
I work one-to-one with sixth formers through every stage of this process, and more broadly help students build a portfolio of intellectual interests beyond the school curriculum — through curated reading, essay competitions, recommended lectures and courses, and independent projects that develop genuine curiosity and original thinking.
I also work with younger students from primary upwards, building the reading, writing, and thinking habits that underpin everything else. Whether a student is preparing for school entrance exams at 7+ or 11+, working towards GCSEs, or developing the skills they will need for sixth form and beyond, the approach is the same: close reading, clear thinking, and the craft of writing well.
About
I have eighteen years' experience as a private tutor. I have helped students gain places at competitive independent schools, guided them through GCSEs and A Levels to achieve top grades, and mentored sixth formers through university applications, building the kind of intellectual profiles that win offers from Oxford, Cambridge, and leading universities worldwide. I also work with university students on the writing and research skills required for course essays and dissertations.
I have a background in editing and publishing, and serve as a governor for a North London independent school. I run workshops and masterclasses in essay writing, poetry analysis, and creative writing, and founded The Seymour Method to bring together the skills and expertise I have spent my career developing.
“We started working with Viola online from Hong Kong before relocating to London, and she was an invaluable guide through the whole process. She was able to quickly get our daughter up to speed with the British curriculum and prepare her for entrance exams to her chosen schools. Our daughter is now happy and thriving at Wycombe Abbey, her first choice.”
“Viola sees the potential in each child and encourages them to self-motivate. She is calming through the most anxious times and kept my children focused without raising their stress levels. Very pleasing results.”
